These courses are required by the RCMP if you are interested in obtaining your Possession and Acquisition License for non-restricted (hunting rifles or shotguns) or restricted firearms. The course involves 8 – 10 hours of instruction with hands-on practice with deactivated firearms and ammunition. Our goal is to make you comfortable with firearm safety and handling.
Courses are taught at Advent Arms Corp. in Coombs, but I will instruct private courses in other parts of Vancouver Island.

The Canadian Firearms Safety Course (CFSC) was developed in partnership with the provinces and territories, national organizations with an ongoing interest in firearms safety, and many firearms and hunter education course instructors from across Canada. This course was developed to meet the mandatory requirements set out in subparagraph 106(2)(c)(i) of the Criminal Code of Canada and came into effect January 1, 1994.
As a result of the Firearms Act, the firearms safety training that was provided to firearms owners and users required modification. The revised CFSC, which was implemented on February 1, 1999, reflects the new legislation and focuses primarily on non-restricted firearms (rifles and shotguns). The legislation stipulates that individuals wishing to acquire non-restricted firearms must take the CFSC and pass the tests before you can take the Canadian Restricted Firearms Safety Course.
Topics covered in the CFSC include:
– the evolution of firearms, major parts, types, and actions;
– basic firearms safety practices;
– ammunition;
– operating firearms actions;
– firing techniques and procedures;
– care of non-restricted firearms;
– responsibilities of the firearms owner/user; and
– safe storage, display, transportation, and handling of restricted firearms.

The legislation stipulates that individuals wishing to acquire restricted and/or prohibited firearms must take the Canadian Firearms Safety Course (CFSC) first, and then the Canadian Restricted Firearms Safety Course (CRFSC), including passing the tests.
Topics covered in the CRFSC include:
– the evolution of firearms, major parts, types, and actions;
– basic firearms safety practices;
– ammunition;
– operating handgun actions;
– firing techniques and procedures for handguns;
– care of restricted firearms;
– responsibilities of the firearms owner/user; and
– safe storage, display, transportation, and handling of restricted firearms.

Private Classes

All non-restricted courses require a minimum of 8-10 hours of instruction and 20-30 min of practical testing for each student.
The restricted course, if taught within 7 days of taking the non-restricted course, can be taught in 4-6 hours. Not including testing.
Non-restricted and restricted courses are prohibited from being taught on the same day.
I only offer combined courses for the non-restricted and restricted with 6 or less people due to the instruction and testing times required. Combined courses require 2 days because they must be instructed on separate days.
Group classes are on weekends only. Private courses can be arranged on weekdays as necessary.
